MEET OUR PASTOR

Apostle Henry B. Alexander, D.Min., Ph.D.

For more than four decades, Apostle Henry B. Alexander has faithfully served as pastor, apostolic leader, and spiritual father to generations of believers. In April of 1981, he founded what was then known as Bethany Community Church of Pomona. Through consistent prayer, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the Word of God, that local congregation has grown into what is now Shield of Faith Christian Center. Through his pastoral leadership, thousands have come to know the Lord, been discipled in the faith, and empowered to serve both church and community.

In 1994, Apostle Alexander established the Shield of Faith Fellowship of Churches International, an apostolic alliance with churches and ministries spanning every continent. His heart for unity, accountability, and spiritual covering has shaped leaders across denominations, cultures, and nations.Apostle Alexander first came to saving faith in 1959 under the ministry of the late Bishop James A. Johnson at Bethesda Temple Church in St. Louis, Missouri. He was later mentored by the late Bishop Robert W. McMurray of Los Angeles, whose influence helped refine his apostolic calling. His ministry was ultimately shaped under the pastoral guidance and spiritual example of his father, the late Elder Arling M. Alexander. He was formally ordained as an elder in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World in March of 1981.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948, Apostle Alexander is the youngest of sixteen children and comes from a remarkable spiritual heritage. All seven of his surviving brothers are senior pastors of their own churches. His father served faithfully for many years as an assistant pastor before founding his own congregation, which continues to thrive today. In 1972, Apostle Alexander married his lifelong partner in ministry, Bishop Marty Alexander, an ordained pastor and beloved First Lady. Together they faithfully served the people of God for more than five decades. In June 2025, Bishop Marty Alexander transitioned to glory, leaving behind a profound legacy of faith, compassion, wisdom, and service that continues to bless The Shield family and the broader fellowship.

Apostle Alexander is the proud father of Stephanie, Aaron, and Roslyn Jefferson, foster-daughter Gladys Brockington, and a devoted grandfather to Eric Nathan Alexander-Hughes, Erin Alexander, Hannah Alexander, and Cherokee, Cheyenne, and Cree Jefferson.

Academically, Apostle Alexander pursued undergraduate studies at UCLA before completing military service and earning a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Research from California State University, Los Angeles in 1978. He continued postgraduate studies in Urban Planning at the University of Southern California and Biblical Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. He later earned his Master’s degree, Doctor of Ministry degree, and Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Friends International Christian University, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from California State Christian University.

Beyond the pulpit, Apostle Alexander’s ministry has consistently embraced community transformation. His leadership has given rise to initiatives including a Bible college, a Christian school, an independent living center for the homeless, and an economic development corporation focused on empowerment and outreach. He has also served in numerous leadership capacities within the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World.Today, Apostle Alexander continues to lead with faith and vision as the ministry enters a new season.

The Shield is currently in the midst of building a new sanctuary in Rancho Cucamonga, California, which will officially bear the name “The Shield.” This new campus represents both continuity and expansion—honoring the foundation laid over decades while positioning the ministry for greater Kingdom impact in the years ahead.Through every season of growth, loss, and promise, Apostle Henry B. Alexander remains steadfast in his calling—to preach the gospel, develop leaders, and advance the Kingdom of God with integrity, love, and apostolic authority.

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant…” – Matthew 25:23

With hearts filled with both gratitude and reverence, we honor the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Bishop Marty E. Alexander—a woman whose life was wholly devoted to God, His people, and His Church.

Bishop Marty was more than a leader; she was a vessel chosen by God, marked by grace, strength, and unwavering faith. From the moment she gave her life to Christ in 1971, she committed herself fully to the work of the Kingdom. Whether serving in quiet, unseen acts or standing boldly to proclaim the Word of God, she carried a spirit of excellence and humility that impacted all who encountered her.

As co-founder of Shield of Faith Christian Center and a foundational pillar of the Shield of Faith Fellowship of Churches International, Bishop Marty helped shape a ministry that now spans the globe. Alongside her beloved husband, Apostle Henry B. Alexander, she labored faithfully for decades, building not just a church, but a legacy of faith that continues to transform lives across generations and nations She was a preacher of power, a teacher of truth, and an evangelist with a global reach. Through her ministry, thousands experienced deliverance, restoration, and the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Her voice carried authority, but her life carried h even greater witness—demonstrating the love, discipline, and the compassion of Christ in every sphere she touched.

A TRIBUTE TO BISHOP MARTY E. ALEXANDER

Beyond the pulpit, Bishop Marty served with tireless dedication. She was a counselor, mentor, and spiritual mother to many. Her nurturing spirit, wisdom, and genuine care made her beloved not only in her local congregation, but across continents. From Africa to Asia, Europe to Mexico, her ministry left an indelible mark on the hearts of God’s people. She was also a woman of remarkable accomplishment—educated, disciplined, and driven—yet she never allowed her achievements to overshadow her greatest calling: to serve God and His people with her whole heart.

To her family, she was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a joyful grandmother. To the Church, she was a guiding light. To the world, she was a testimony of what it means to live a life fully surrendered to God. Though we deeply feel her absence, we rejoice in the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of Faith, service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the call of God. Bishop Marty E. Alexander lived her calling. She served with excellence. She loved without measure. And now, she rests in the presence of the Lord she so faithfully served. Her legacy lives on—in The Shield, in this Fellowship, and in all of us.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

WATER BAPTISM IN JESUS' NAME

We believe water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ is the biblical response of faith and obedience for believers, symbolizing repentance, the washing away of sins, and identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. It is a powerful step of transformation and covenant commitment with God.

THE ONENESS OF GOD

We believe there is one true and living God who has revealed Himself fully in Jesus Christ. God is not divided into separate persons, but is one in essence, power, and identity. Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God, embodying the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form.

BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a promised gift for believers, empowering them for holy living, bold witness, and spiritual service. The initial biblical evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, as demonstrated in the Book of Acts.

APOSTOLIC DOCTRINE

We believe in the apostles’ doctrine as the foundational teaching of the New Testament Church, rooted in Scripture and modeled in the Book of Acts. This includes repentance, water baptism in Jesus’ name, receiving the Holy Spirit, holy living, discipleship, and faithfully continuing in biblical truth, fellowship, prayer, and kingdom mission.
